Film & Video
The development of film to replace glass plates in still photography opened the door to "motion pictures." The earliest film was simply a short scene lasting about two seconds: the "Roundhay Garden Scene" captured in 1888. Within about ten years films began to be used to tell a story, such as "Le Voyage dans la Lune" (A Trip to the Moon) in 1902. In the 1920s, new technology allowed filmmakers to attach to each film a soundtrack of speech, music and sound effects synchronized with the action on the screen. These sound films were initially distinguished by calling them "talking pictures", or talkies. Color was introduced in the late 1930s.
