Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only one we know of that sustains life. Part of the reason for this is the atmosphere which contains primarily nitrogen, oxygen and small amounts of carbon - dioxide. The earth's surface transfers energy to the atmosphere in amounts that equal what it absorbs. This keeps the surface and atmospheric temperatures in thermal equilibrium. To do this the earth's surface temperature must remain, on average, around 13 degrees C.

A very nicely designed home page with a simple effective navigational scheme (categories include atmosphere, land, oceans, energy and life). Content includes interesting articles and many excellent images. Also includes an excellent biography section entitled Pioneers in Geoscience and some great FAQ-style articles (e.g. Why isn't Earth as hot as an oven?). Also features excellent sections on the various satellite missions and NASA research projects, and a variety o useful general information.
