Phylogenetics: the Classification of Life

Phylogenetics is an area of biology that studies the evolutionary relationships among various groups of organisms. It does so through analysis of molecular sequencing data and morphological comparisons. Taxonomy also characterizes organisms according to similarities, but with its grounding in evolutionary development of attributes phylogenetics is distinct from taxonomy. The difficulty phylogenetics faces is that genetic data are only available for the present, fossil records being quite sporadic.
